Caravan tax debate continues

If you’ve been following leisure industry news of late, you’ll be well aware of the government’s plans to introduce VAT on the sale of static caravans and larger tourers from October this year, and the subsequent opposition it has faced.

From politicians to manufacturers, many groups have spoken out against the move due to the effect it will have on the UK tourism industry. Last week a cross-party group of MPs moved a step closer to overturning the legislation as the government agreed to extend the deadline for reconsidering the decision to 18th May.

A House of Commons vote also showed that government support for the new caravan tax is declining, with a sharp drop in the number of MPs in favour of the move. A number of representatives from constituencies with a strong caravanning tradition are visiting the House this week to stir up further support against the taxation of static and large touring caravans.

If you’re thinking of buying a caravan or upgrading your current model, Coast advises you to do so sooner rather than later to potentially save money.
