Experts warn motorhome and caravan owners to stay alert on the road

At this time of year, seasonal hazards such as lingering darkness and poor weather conditions make staying alert on the road all the more important.

The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has issued top tips to motorhome drivers and motorists towing a caravan on how to remain aware and fight possible fatigue when making a long journey…

  • If you can, share the driving with another person
  • Plan a break at least once every two hours
  • Try to avoid travelling late at night
  • Drink plenty of fluids
  • Pay particular attention to these tips when using motorways, as the long stretches of straight road can make you prone to weariness and lapses in concentration
  • If you do start to feel weary, stop at the next service station and get a few minutes fresh air
  • Should you still feel tired, have a caffeinated drink and take a 20 minute sleep – although don’t do this more than once in a journey as it will not have the same effect second time round

“Motorways are our safest roads – but they are monotonous,” commented the IAM’s Peter Rodger. “If you’re embarking on a long journey, get a good rest and use this advice to help make sure you’re alert throughout.”
