Highways Agency urges caravan owners to show a little ‘TLC’

Lots of organisations have released tips to help you tow your caravan, but the UK Highways Agency has gone one better by releasing a video guide to make sure tourers stay safe on the roads.

The agency urges caravan owners to give their leisure vehicle some ‘TLC’, which stands for tyres, load and coupling. The first check you should carry out is to make sure your tyres are in good condition with a legal tread depth and correctly inflated.

Then caravanners need to check their caravan is loaded evenly, not exceeding the weight limit, with heavier items packed in the centre of the van.

Finally, the Highways Agency instructs drivers to securely couple the tourer to their tow car, taking care that the breakaway cable is fitted adequately.

Even with the utmost TLC, you can’t account for every risk on the road when you go on holiday. That’s why it’s important to make sure your vehicle is protected by a touring caravan insurance policy.
