How to prepare your motorhome for the winter months

It is crucial to prepare your motorhome correctly for the winter months as damage can quickly happen to a vehicle which is left unprepared. Here are some tips to help you prepare your motorhome…

Mechanical side:

  • Change the oil just before storing your motorhome.
  • If you plan to leave your vehicle for a long period of time, try to keep the engine battery charged. A good way to do this is by using a solar trickle charger. Alternatively you could remove the engine battery and charge it regularly to maximize its life.

Inside of your motorhome:

  • Thoroughly clean the interior of your motorhome as mould may grow during storage time, be sure to clean the fridge and freezer and leave the doors open also.
  • Remove any bedding, cushions and towels.
  • Drain all water from pipes and storage pipes. If possible store removable tanks indoors.
  • Remove butane and propane tanks.
  • Ensure the vehicle is correctly locked.

Outside of your motorhome:

  • Clean the outside of your motorhome.
  • Check the tyre pressures.
  • To prevent the tyres from deteriorating you could consider placing the vehicle on axle stands for the winter season.
  •  Don’t cover your motorhome in tarpaulin, this will stop the air from circulating and may cause mould to develop inside the motorhome. Instead, build a frame to place the tarpaulin on which is set away from the vehicle.
