NCC issues caravan manufacturing warning

Although British events such as the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the Olympic Games have meant a surge in people choosing UK caravan holidays over European apartment breaks, the National Caravan Council (NCC) has warned that this popularity increase is not being reflected on the manufacturing side of the industry.

In the twelve months between May 2011 and May 2012, the number of caravans being produced in Britain fell by 20 percent compared to the same period during the previous year.

These figures were echoed by sales statistics, with 17% fewer factory sales and a reduction of nine per cent in retail sales.

The decline in manufacturing and purchasing power has been attributed to difficult economic conditions, with companies being forced to scale back production and decrease workforce numbers, while many caravan owners are holding onto their leisure vehicles for longer rather than upgrading.

Not all is lost, though – the export of UK caravans to Europe increased during the same period, plus those who did purchase a caravan in the UK were 50% more likely to be offered a discount on their new model.
