Second hand static caravan market booming

Earlier this year the government brought in a 5% VAT charge on the purchase of new static caravans, which is leading to a wave of demands for pre-owned models.

According to Henry Wood, owner of Moss Wood caravan park in Lancashire and vice chairman of the British Holiday & Home Parks Association, although the new legislation has not impacted on the level of sales interest their caravans are attracting, an increased number of people are requesting second hand static homes.

“Many people realise that the VAT change is likely to add a four-figure sum to the cost of a new caravan holiday home so understandably they are casting around instead for a high-quality pre-owned model,” Wood told Caravan Times, before warning: “This is happening at the same time as many existing owners are postponing a decision to trade-up their holiday home, creating a national dearth of accessible stock.”
