Towing safety warning

As we head into peak holiday season, Coast would like to warn all our touring caravan customers about the dangers of driving perilously when towing a leisure vehicle.

Earlier this month the M5 was brought to a standstill when a touring caravan overturned near Burnham-on-Sea. Luckily nobody was hurt but the incident did cause severe disruption to motorway traffic.

Remember that cars towing caravans or trailers are limited to a maximum speed of 50mph on single carriageway roads and 60mph on dual carriageways.

To ensure your caravan is as stable as possible, never exceed the maximum weight limit and make sure it is packed sensibly – distribute the weight evenly within the ‘van with the heaviest items towards the centre of your leisure vehicle. Placing too much weight towards either end will cause your tourer to become unbalanced.

If you’re worried about towing a caravan then there are a number of professional courses available up and down the country to help build your confidence.

Even the safest of drivers can still become involved in an accident, which is why it’s important to make sure you have an up-to-date touring caravan insurance policy.
