Woolly winter warmer!

We’ve had more than our share of chilly weather recently, which is why the Coast team was amused to see an Australian caravan taking insulation to a new level!

This yarn-wrapped touring caravan is the brainchild of The Woolmark Company and Country Style magazine, which commissioned the Nundle Woollen Mill in New South Wales to create a cable knit jumper fit for a leisure vehicle.

Eight committed knitters spent five weeks assembling the woolly warmer, using more than 1,000 balls of yarn from 20 sheep. To make it suitable for outdoor display, a special 48-ply yarn was produced – much thicker than the 8-ply material used for most human knitwear.

The knitted caravan cosy, which covers a 1950s vintage tourer belonging to Sydney couple Bob and Yvonne Kerr, caused a stir when it was unveiled at the Sydney Royal Easter Show last month. In fact, it’s proved so popular that the team behind the idea have abandoned plans to cut up the cover and turn it into jumpers once it has completed a tour of Australian agricultural shows, instead hoping to find a cold caravan to provide the shroud with a permanent home.
