Turn caravanning into a culinary adventure!
The Coast team really enjoyed a blog post on the Practical Caravan website recently, which looked at reasons to eat locally when you’re on a caravan or motorhome holiday.
With kitchen facilities within your leisure vehicle, it can be very tempting to stay in and cook every evening. However, dining out when you’re on holiday plays an important part in supporting the local economy.
It doesn’t have to be expensive either: fish and chips at the seaside could cost less than buying cookery ingredients from the supermarket. The key is to stick to your budget, be open minded, and ask around for recommendations – site operators can normally tell you the best restaurants in the locality.
Of course, if you’re a ‘foodie’ then you might want to tailor your holiday around local cuisine, visiting places renowned for the best of British produce. Here are a few ideas for culinary counties and taste bud-tingling towns…
- Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire – home of the traditional English pork pie
- Bakewell, Derbyshire – who can resist a delicious slice of bakewell tart?!
- Blackburn, Lancashire – nothing beats a traditional northern hot pot!
- Pontefract, West Yorkshire – liquorice lovers should certainly pay this historic market town a visit
- Glamorgan, Wales – it might not contain any meat but a Glamorgan sausage is a gastronomic delight. You can also satisfy your sweet tooth with a Welsh cake!
- Cheshire – cheese lovers can taste the crumbly local delicacy in a number of locations
- Bourneville, West Midlands – the home of Cadbury’s chocolate has an excellent museum and a discount shop
- Cornwall – for a traditional English cream tea or meat pasty, look no further!
- Aberdeen, Scotland – meat lovers can’t miss an opportunity to try a succulent fillet of Aberdeen Angus beef
