VW launches electronically extendable campervan

Volkswagen has launched a revolutionary new edition of its Transporter campervan – named the DoubleBack – featuring an extendable rear pod.

The DoubleBack represents the first major innovation in campervan design since the introduction of the elevating roof in the 1980s, bringing together the convenience of a compact vehicle with the comfort of a spacious camper. The rear pod extends electronically and two legs are deployed to stabilise the back section, which self level on uneven terrain.

Priced at £54,995, the DoubleBack’s rear pod creates around two metres of additional living space, while it also features an elevating roof containing a sleeping area with fold out bed. It can carry two or three passengers in transit, with seating arranged either as captain’s chairs or benchseats.

“The DoubleBack has been inspired by a desire to see a truly spacious, comfortable camper with all the practical advantages of a smaller vehicle,” remarked Craig McCormack, Volkswagen Company Director.
