Driving abroad: Germany

Following on from our piece a few days ago about driving in Spain, here are some tips from the Institute of Advanced Motorists if you’re planning to tow your caravan or take your motorhome to Germany this summer:

  • Not all motorways are without speed limits – check first whether the route you are taking has speed restrictions in place, as these are strictly enforced
  • If your vision is impaired by fog, snow or rain during the daytime, you must use dipped headlights or daytime running lights
  • Although not compulsory for non-residents, it is recommended that you carry a warning triangle, spare bulbs and a first aid kit in your car
  • When parking, if there is not a meter you should check whether you need to purchase a blue parking disk or parking voucher from a nearby service station
  • If you have a radar speed camera detector, whether you are using it or not, you could be fined up to €1500 as these are illegal in Germany

Doing your research is not the only task you should carry out ahead of your holiday to ensure you’re properly prepared; you should also check whether your caravan or motorhome insurance is valid.
