Staycation fever continues

Forget Barbados or Benidorm: you’re more likely to find Britons holidaying in Brighton or Bognor Regis this year, according to a new poll.

Hotel operator Travelodge has discovered that the trend for ‘staycationing’ – taking your annual break in the UK instead of overseas – is continuing, with two thirds of people planning to holiday on home soil in 2013.

London and Edinburgh are top of the tourist attractions that people are most keen to visit this year, with the Lake District, Cornwall, Dorset, Devon and North Wales also ranking highly on the ‘must see’ list.

It’s not just hotel breaks that are proving popular: lots of staycationers are planning to hook up their caravan and enjoy some British country air this summer.

“The staycation trend accelerating to record levels and boosting our economy by £12 billion this year – is a very welcome sign, and hopefully this is the start of our 2012 Olympics legacy gain,” commented Travelodge’s Grant Hearn “During 2012, our capital city was showcased in its true glory to all corners of the UK and the world, and it’s a great result that London has been crowned as the top Staycation destination for 2013.”
